Sistas in Business Received the Friend of Education Award from San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD)

SIB Gives Back Because it's Our Social Responsibility

Read and Lead is Sistas in Business' premiere community involvement program. The program serves elementary school children from grades pre-k3 - 6th grade. Participating schools include Bowden Elementary, Cameron Elementary, Davis Middle School and King Academy.

We partner with major corporations, schools, civic and community organizations to help administer the program in three SAISD schools. The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa's San Antonio Chapter works with the kids at Bowden Elementary, Davis Middle School and King Academy. SAREADS is our book provider, along with Scholastic Books; we are one of SA2020's community partners; and we have the support of James Howard, Board Trustee of San Antonio Independent School District.

The expansion of Read and Lead would not be possible without the generous support of HEB, who has supported this program since its inception. HEB is a strong advocate for education and community, so supporting Read and Lead has been a no brainer for them.

Comerica Bank has recently come on board to help support the program and Allstate has provided their Good Hands grant from 2011 - 2014.

The Read and Lead model has worked exceptionally well because it provides children with a voice; helps improve their image in the community; gives them exposure to community service and opportunities outside of school; it helps improve their conduct and classroom behavior; builds their confidence and self esteem; but also makes them feel that they matter and that they have a chance to succeed. Our moniker is "If YOU Can READ...YOU Can LEAD".

Scenes from September's Read & Lead Outing

Over 65 students from Cameron Elementary School attended Read & Lead Day, on Saturday, September 26 at the Carver Library. They all received free books from Sistas in Business, so they would have books at home to read. SIB also donated over 100 books to the Friends of the Carver Library for their annual book sale, which will be held in October 2015.

Volunteer by Hosting a Reading Event or Listen to a Kid Read...It's Really Just that Simple!

How would you like to make a difference in a child’s life, just by volunteering to listen to them read or host an event at your business, school, church or community center? Sistas in Business has a community involvement program called Read and Lead where we focus on helping elementary and middle school kids improve their reading skills. All we need are people to volunteer to listen to the kids read…you can come to us or we can come to you. We take the kids out one Saturday a month and we hope you can join us! It’s a breathtaking experience to witness the love for reading that the kids in our program have demonstrated. We’ve had many people from the community listen to our Read and Lead kids read and the kids have literally brought them to tears. Take a few minutes of your time one Saturday, this school year, and listen to the kids read or host an opportunity for the kids to read to the patrons at your location. The students have read to wounded soldiers at the Fischer House; pregnant and teen moms at Seton Home; customers at McDonald’s; customers at HEB; guests at the YMCA; peer to peer reading at various schools; Morgan’s Wonderland; the Witte Museum; Carver Library, Carver Community Cultural Center; Normandy Terrace Nursing Home to read to the elderly, Bayseas Restaurant, hosted by Derrick Williams and more. Parents, teachers, school administrators and other nonprofit organizations have teamed up to help students achieve success in reading.
